Physical therapy develops, restores and maintains maximum movement and functional ability. Its effectiveness is determined both by the creativity of the therapist and the cooperation and motivation of the patient.

Outreach’s therapists bring resistive bands, cuff weights, massage cream,  blood pressure cuff, home exercise sheets, electric stimulation portable unit (if necessary), goniometer, tape measure and—most importantly—our professional knowledge and hands. In addition, we order assistive devices as needed from local medical supply vendors.

Occupational Therapy is about understanding the importance of an activity to an individual, being able to analyze the physical, mental and social components of an activity, the environment and or person to enable them to resume the activity. OT’s work with people to restore physical and cognitive function and can also assist in making modifications to the home environment  and or work towards improving such activities as cooking, bathing, dressing and social participation.

Speech and Language Pathologists or Speech Therapists address peoples speech and vocal production, swallowing difficulties and language needs through speech therapy in a variety of different ways. Depending on the nature and severity of the disorder, common treatments may range from physical strengthening exercises, instructive or repetitive practice and drilling, to the use of audio-visual aids and other strategies to facilitate functional communication.

It certainly can be. The determining factor is the effectiveness of the individualized treatment plan. Outreach’s therapists are particularly creative in their approach. We pride ourselves on our ability— under the guidance of your physician, podiatrist and or Nurse practitioner — to carefully assess and assign a viable treatment plan for each patient.

This very much depends on what is specified in the referring doctor’s prescription regarding duration and frequency of treatment. Other factors include the acuteness of the condition and how quickly your overall function is improving.

Balance can definitely be improved through exercise. This is supported by the results of a study conducted in January 1997 by Shumway-Cook, et al, with a population of 105 community-dwelling adults over the age of 65 who had two or more falls during the previous six months. The study examined the multidimensional effects on balance, mobility, and falls risk among adults within that community. The results showed that exercise can improve balance and mobility function, as well as reduce the likelihood for falls among community-dwelling older adults with a history of falling.
